(i). During this career path in Strathclyde Police, constable McLean sustained what appeared to be a minor back injury rescuing a waterlogged casualty from the harbour.
(ii). Several month later, during a remote helicopter casualty evac., the emergency was under-crewed. There were two paramedics required at one end of a stretcher (to administer life-saving protocols) bearing a seriously injured farmer requiring a lift onto a hovering air-ambulance helicopter. The aircraft could not land due to the boggy, unstable nature of the terrain. So the pilot was unable to assist with lifting the stretcher on-board. Constable McLean managed to lift the other end of the stretcher (solo) onto the ambulance helicopter. Miraculously the casualty survived. However, the spinal injury became worse.
(iii). The third and police career-ending injury was a casualty choking to death. The casualty was wedged in a position that had rendered him incapable of exiting. Then after cyanosis was witnessed on the patients face and hands, the casualty had become unconscious. As this was not a Road Traffic Accident nor similar high-impact-trauma event, and no neck injuries were likely, the casualty was safely extracted. The patient survived. Unfortunately, due to the rural nature of the incident, there were no immediate back-up emergency service crew available. The manoeuvre lifting a very large, unconscious casualty, single headedly caused a third, cumulative back injury that can be clearly seen on the following MRI scans.
By 1994 the deterioration of this was to a point where paraplegia was indicated by the neurological surgeon. So spinal surgery to remove the collapse intervertebral disc at L5/S1 was required and completed.

Russ McLean had moved down from his home on the Island of Davaar to London for employment to earn sufficient to restart a ferry service back home between Argyll and Antrim. Hence the surgery was performed at the London commuter proximity…

The final part of police officer Russ McLean’ career in this vocation is captured in a fairly rare photograph from the 1980s…
^^ Excerpt From A Short article About Rural Policing ^^
After recovery from spinal surgery, Russ McLean returned to his original career path in an effort to follow his father (here + here + here) and grandfather into the Royal Navy.
Unfortunately, the medical requirements for service in the Royal Navy conflicted with the spinal surgery and disbarred McLean from that course.
Fortunately he was still able to pursue a vocation related to nautical matters and earlier tuition/certification/experience from boat charter on the Island of Arran; to a post-police career and after training Russ McLean became a harbourmaster.

The employment as harbourmaster was and is helped existentially by the brilliant Julia Russell and, ironically by the High-Street-Rescue initiative which Unique Property Bulletin has pioneered. Specifically the healthcare given by one of our tenants as listed: here (this may be subject to the legal membership protocol requiring a password, in which case, please text or phone: here).
at
n addition, the Unique Property Buetin and two charities meant that what a somehat harsh comment by Strathclyde Police human resources official said, was proven to be anythig but the case:
Stathclyde Police HR Civilian: “Constable McLean, best you get used to the new ddaytime televisin and disability benefits. You are no use to the police in this condition.”
It should be declared that this ill-advised remark, in no way represented the general views of Strathclyde Police, nor the healthcare support and mentorship for alternate career pathway received. From fellow officers right up to Assistant Chief Constable level (for many years after departing Strathclyyde Police) and only ended, particularly in respect to PTSD support, when Strathclyde Police was abolished on 31st March 2013 (here).

This turned out to be the “best job in the worl” for Russ. Then the spinal injury caused a reversion to an earlier career path, albeit marooned on dry land. No photographs exist of Russ in his harbourmster uniform, but here is a colleague ahowing why the next job was also a “best job in the workd”…
Something that really helped what can be a monastic time at the computer was Denzil popping up for a chat at the right hand side of the screen via the social media chat-box. Denzil was a remarkable human being. Very kind and hopefully his modesty about that and what he gave away in thoughtfulness along with real support to places he loved and always cared about will be part of his legacy. That and a fleet of brilliant detective novels. Thank you Denzil. Rest in Peace. Last but by no means least… Fiona, please accept my heartfelt thoughts for this awful time of grief. Best wishes, Russ ❤️.
Rather than claim disability benefit, useful employment was found that was capable of adaptation to fit in with spinal disability. Subsequent career path: Click Here.
In Summary
The first employment as a boatmaster starting in Corrie and Sannox on the Island of Arran, led to training in engineering with a view to following a grandfather into marine engineering.
That was interrupted by a election to a sabbatical post as student union president in Hamilton (here).
Subsequently, due to what has become a lifelong friendship built up with neighbouring police officers in Almada Street, Hamilton, a career in the police was chosen.
Unfortunately that was ended due to disability. A land-based career as a harbourmaster followed.
In addition, the accidental success of an obscure publication named Unique Property Bulletin from 1984 hobby, has resulted in a two million pound job-creation and property renovation business (originally: Argyll Group plc). Plus two registered charities and a third charity with the working title: Community Owned Power Generator Stations (Google searhc term: COP-GS) is on the starting blocks.
So far, as at 2025, this is the summary…
